‘Mind the Gap’ – Ensuring Compliance

by | Sep 19, 2017 | Engineering Design & HSE

As a general rule the UK is ageing and the engineering workforce is getting older – with the proportion of young workers (aged under 25, especially) decreasing over the last ten years. With this in mind, employers are placing increasing emphasis on employee retention, as those with higher level skills realise their potential to renegociate contracts, or move on to pastures new.

The recent Engineering UK survey showed that the skills supply and demand “… is already being reflected in employers’ reports of skills shortages and the government’s shortage occupation list for skilled immigrants. This situation is expected to be exacerbated by the growth of new industries, some of which scarcely yet exist, emerging from new technologies and knowledge.”

At the highly skilled end of the engineering spectrum, companies are frequently being faced with skills shortages.  This is especially true on projects that require specialist knowledge, such as in the marine, food, beverage, power and rail sectors.  It is also being seen in specialised experience areas such as COMAH compliance, DSEAR risk assessment or functional safety competence.

The challenge for companies is how to manage a project’s lifecycle, whilst also ensuring that they have the appropriate people, with the right skill sets, to ensure compliance.  As the specialised knowledge base within the engineering sector becomes harder to recruit and keep, there is an increasing argument for using third party engineering service providers, such as GSE Systems Ltd.

Over the years, GSE Systems Ltd has helped hundreds of companies within high hazard, highly regulated industries to ensure compliance and deliver on their projects.  GSE Systems Ltd has built its business on ensuring the right calibre of team is in place to meet increasingly complex project, design and compliance requirements, whilst also keeping clients informed and compliant in the ever-changing engineering environment.

Whether a company is looking to outsource an entire project – from planning to delivery – or needs GSE Systems Ltd to take on specialised aspects within an existing project, the team has a breadth of experience and application of best practice within multiple industrial sectors to suit.  To find out more, why not call us on  01642 613622 or send us an email: engineering@gses.com
